He gave a presentation about his experiences as a Civil Rights Lawyer in New York City titled “Stories From the Streets.”

Panelists included Joanne Poole, a REALTOR® and 2020 NAR Chairperson of the Multicultural Real Estate Leadership Advisory Group; Dr. Danette O’Neal, Professor, Author-LEED educator, HGTV alumna, entrepreneur, and REALTOR®;  Sarah L. Ware, the principal and managing broker of the Ware Realty Group, LLC; Zeke Morris, past president of the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, and REALTORS® Arthur and Marlon Briscoe from Queens.

Far more than the law, [Mr. Mohammedi] spoke to human rights as a person and the audience of Realtors understood.

Susan L. Sommers, SRES Chairperson of the Fair Housing and Cultural Diversity Committee

Mr. Mohammedi’s presentation received overwhelmingly positive feedback as Mr. Mohammedi spoke about his own personal experiences, including times where he went above and beyond his duties as a civil rights attorney.

In her email to Mr. Mohammedi, Susan L. Sommers, SRES Chairperson of the Fair Housing and Cultural Diversity Committee (sommershomes.com), said “The feedback we received from Attendees was they really appreciated the honest conversation and learned much. Many felt enlightened and everyone said it was great. You spoke from your heart not just as a Civil Rights Lawyer which would have been enough but far more. Far more than the law, you spoke to human rights as a person and the audience of Realtors understood.”

In another email, Hind Hatoum, from the NYSAR Board of Directors (2019-2020), said that Mr. Mohammedi’s presentation reminded her of her own experiences with clients who felt discriminated in their housing opportunities due to their wearing of the hijab or headscarf. She said, “It felt as if no matter how many times I reminded the agents in a most respectful way, that they were violating the Fair Housing rules and that needed to educate their homeowners on the importance and seriousness of fair housing, there was no regard or accountability for their behaviours. It hurts, and it deprives any consumer from their rights to equal and fair treatment.”

Mr. Mohammedi’s presentation was critical in reminding real estate professionals and members of the community that our country’s policy on discrimination is simple- there is zero-tolerance for discrimination.

Know Your Rights: Tour https://otmlaw.com/know-rights-tour/ Sat, 11 Feb 2017 17:10:00 +0000 https://otmlaw.com/template3/know-rights-tour/ The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), The Association of Muslim American Lawyers (AMAL) and New Jersey Muslim Lawyers Associations (NJMLA) have been working, diligently across the country and NJ, as people’s rights are being violated:

– Fighting efforts to suppress free speech and the right to protest
– Defending people who were unconstitutionally jailed for being too poor to pay court fines
– Working to defend people who are being discriminated against under the banner of religion

…to name just a few….

Do you know your rights?

[]]AMAL is at the forefront of the many civil rights, civil liberty and constitutional questions facing America. The AMAL Gala will focus on cutting-edge discussion about the state of Civil Rights in the United States — a discussion that is especially relevant in light of the firestorm of race riots, hate crimes, National Anthem protests, calls for drastic immigration reform, Islamophobia, illegal surveillance, profiling, and police brutality — all of which is set against the backdrop of one of the most divisive presidential elections in recent memory.

The inaugural AMAL Gala will take place on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at the Midtown Hilton Hotel, in New York City.

We are honored to have Letiticia James, Public Advocate for the City of New York, Zachary Carter, Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, and Vince Warren, the Center for Constitutional Rights, joining us for this special evening.

Our gala will be hosted by the illustrious Dean Obeidallah, SiriusXM radio host for The Dean Obeidallah show -which is the only daily national radio show hosted by a Muslim American, and frequent CNN contributor and comedian.

Early bird tickets – $120 (until 10/11)
Regular tickets – $150

Sponsor packages are also available.

Standing Up to Islamophobia: What to Do When You See It https://otmlaw.com/standing-islamophobia-see/ Sun, 29 Jan 2017 05:20:09 +0000 https://otmlaw.com/template3/standing-islamophobia-see/ Sunday, January 29
2 PM – 4:30 PM EST
Montclair Fire Headquarters
1 Pine Street, Montclair, New Jersey 07042

Jewish Voice for Peace opposes ALL forms of bigotry, whether anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, or anti-Arab. Islamophobia — the prejudice against or hatred of Islam or Muslims — is a growing problem in America. There has been a rise in hate crimes following the demeaning of Muslims and immigrants during the presidential election campaign, and many of the new Trump administration’s appointments only add to our concerns.

Please join us for a program that will help us understand and address this dangerous situation.
 Hear attorney Omar Mohammedi discuss recent developments in New Jersey as well as broader policy issues. Among Mr. Mohammedi’s clients in over twenty years of civil rights work were a mosque in Bridgewater that was denied a permit, the Rutgers Muslim Student Association that was the target of illegal government surveillance, the estate of Amadou Diallo, shot 41 times by the NYPD, and imams who were arrested for praying at the airport. He is a lecturer at Fordham Law School and was the first Muslim, as well as the first Arab, New York City Commissioner on Human Rights, serving for more than a decade.
 Participate in an interactive workshop on how bystanders can stand up to Islamophobia when incidents occur. The workshop will be co-facilitated by Alana Krivo-Kaufman, senior regional organizer for national Jewish Voice for Peace, along with Northern NJ JVP chapter member Jon Moscow.
